Zhou Jun : The Red and the Black

The three decades of development China is experiencing – building to a crescendo with the Olympics – are unparalleled in history. The colour red, which I use to highlight specific parts of the photograph, can elicit different responses in people from different countries or cultures – at times, it can even have opposite meanings for people.

Michael Najjar : ‘Netropolis’ (Hybrid Photography)

The series ‘Netropolis’ [2003 - 2006] is an exploration of the way global cities will develop in the future. In 1926 director Fritz Lang created the vision of a futuristic 21st Century megacity in his film ‘Metropolis’. Now that we’ve crossed the threshold of the 21st Century new sets of factors unthought of by Lang move to shape the future of our urban species.

In the heart of cities, the façade of one of those office blocks in a commercial center often appears, especially at night, as the page of a still indecipherable grimoire for which we’ve lost any closeness. The modern city keeps people more and more distanced from its functions and its authorities.

This is a set from my few days trip to Paris in spring 2011. My focus here was just on the modern side of the city, besides one, all of the pictures are taken in the hypermodern quarter “La Défense” which was very amazing for me.

Gianni Galassi : Photography Series

Gianni Galassi’s images are focused around the relationship between light and shadow on the surfaces of urban and industrial buildings. Which leads to a set of architectural visions geometrically combined within the frame, emphasizing a whole of elements which transcend the original function of the portrayed artifact, and giving rise to unintentional aesthetic values. The square format sets a distance from the typical rectangular or panoramic frame of movies and TV. A symbol of geometrical purity, the square suggests a formal reading of the image, which is freed from any narrative intention.

Bruno Cals : Horizons (Photography)

These photographs are suggestive of something beyond the record presented. They explore the limits of two-dimensionality, and articulate a radically different perspective on a commonplace visual scenario. In expressing this fresh point of view, Bruno Cals has invoked contrasting themes of possibility versus impossibility, presence versus emptiness, and search versus satisfaction.

Since 1959 Bernd and Hilla Becher have been photographing industrial structures that exemplify modernist engineering, such as gas reservoirs and water towers. These works are often presented in groups of similar design; their repeated images make these everyday buildings seem strangely imposing and alien. Idris Khan’s Every… Bernd And Hilla Becher… series appropriates the Bechers’ imagery and compiles their collections into single super-images.
