João Castilho : ‘Spice’ (Photography)

Photographed in Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats this series forms part of a larger body of work begun in 2008 involving interventions in nature. In the case of Spice, the choice of pepper and saffron spices to make the interventions was inspired by the space itself: a desert of salt. These interventions are inherently ephemeral, and were made to be photographed. The work intersects other forms of art, with elements from painting (the use of pigments) and Land Art (transforming the landscape).

Astrid Kruse Jensen’s photographs are conceived through the encounter between dark and light – in the twilight zone between the illuminated and the hidden, between the real and the imaginary. They are taken at dusk and at night because she mostly uses the ambient light sources on locations.

Jungjin Lee : ‘Wind’ Series (Photography)

Lee’s work is unique in the world of photography. She does not mechanically reproduce multiples, but creates each work by hand. She brushes liquid emulsion onto large sheets of handmade rice and mulberry papers. Her brushstrokes sweep across the soft texture of the paper and capture the photographic image, revealing a painter’s sensibility in a gestural dance.

In all of my photographic work, there is a certain prevailing theme which has something to do with light, movement, and atmosphere. I do love playing with rhythms, light, and lines. I often place landscape in the foreground, inside light, and compose space from the running lines.

De Maré found beauty where it was least expected, in canal locks, viaducts, worn steps and boat sheds. These were utility structures with efficient design that appealed to many modern architects. Presented in Sakura are black and white pinhole photographs of the glorious displays of blooming cherry trees at the time of Sakura Matsuri, the annual cherry blossom festival in Japan. Aramasa employs the pinhole process for this series, a primitive photographic technique that functions like a miniature camera obscura, where light passes through tiny opening in a lensless camera and registers the image directly on film.

On looking closely at the genesis of Sylvie Bonnot’s work, we begin to realize that the photography is at first, if not a pretext, at least an auxiliary to a walk through a landscape, to pace up and down a territory, to submerge there physically, to merge into it, to embody it.

Occupying a space between documentary and the make-believe, these photographs, reproduced to a grand scale, transform the elemental terrain of giant Icelandic glaciers as they melt away into a strange, futuristic landscape. Mitch Dobrowner : Photography

Landscapes are living eco systems and environments. They have existed well before, and will hopefully be here way beyond the time we are here. When taking photographs, time and space seem hard for me to measure. Whenever I shoot a ‘quality’ image, I know it. At those moments things are quiet, seem simple again – and I obtain a respect and reverence for the world that is hard to communicate through words.

Even though Michael Levin was born land-locked under a vast Prairie sky in Winnipeg, Canada, it was not until he moved out to Vancouver that he became engaged with the potential for landscape photography. Perhaps it was simply his need to better understand his new surroundings – water, water, everywhere – that provoked his deeper interest in the way landscape can shape photographic reality.

Laurent Millet : ‘Les Monolithes’ Series (Photography)

“In my imagination,” says Millet, “I was seeing these engines, half-covered by the water, like geometric shapes.” It’s not necessary to know what he was thinking when he made these pictures to feel they have a somber quality. And yet there is a delicacy about them too, in the irregularity of their outside lines, and in the flimsiness of the shapes themselves. “I have a strong necessity to build things,” he says, “but now my constructions have become faster and lighter.”

The photographer seldom uses a fast exposure to capture a movement or a journey. More often, he leaves the camera open for a long time, so that the silence impregnates the film. Stillness needs time to rise to the surface. Stillness is the state of grace of a messianic moment, not the exaltation of an arrival, but the end of a journey.

Photography always implies a relationship between a body – the man with a camera – and the world. Even today, photographic gear remains heavy and cumbersome, an impediment.
