Mårten Lange : “Anomalies” Series (Photography)

Shot in Sweden and Japan, the images in Anomalies are deliberately de-contextualized. Lange notes. “It’s not about a place. If you leave the place out of the story, the images can take on different weights. Places are really loud.” The objects that populate Anomalies, on the other hand, are suffused with a deep, seemingly impenetrable silence.

Tim Lisko : ‘Shinkansen’ Series (Photography)

When I make a photograph, I am literally cropping out the rest of existence — its tension, its chaos, its hunger, its pain. For one small moment, I wall myself into a world of my own creation; a world where things may not make immediate narrative or logical sense, but where everything is in balance.

The cities visited by Awoiska van der Molen are not usually part of the regular city trip assortment. Not that it really matters: we would be spared the obligatory sights anyway, and if, like so many tourists, couleur locale is what you’re looking for, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

João Castilho : ‘Spice’ (Photography)

Photographed in Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats this series forms part of a larger body of work begun in 2008 involving interventions in nature. In the case of Spice, the choice of pepper and saffron spices to make the interventions was inspired by the space itself: a desert of salt. These interventions are inherently ephemeral, and were made to be photographed. The work intersects other forms of art, with elements from painting (the use of pigments) and Land Art (transforming the landscape).

“After hanging out for a little while, I noticed how people were drawn to the light and how they would interact with it. Some were clearly anxious about swimming in the dark water and looking for the security of the sun. Others seemed to seek out its warmth. Some would stare up into the light. Others would float face down, peering into water.” James Pomerantz

Bohnchang Koo : ‘White’ Series (Photography)

Bohnchang’s work has always dealt with impermanence, with the decay and disappearance of living things. In his recent work, Koo continues this long journey to capture the fleeting and the mortal. In these spare natural landscapes—the sea, pine needles on snow, dust on a wall, withered vines —the artist renders scenes of exquisite beauty while evoking the inexorable passage of time.

When one considers these photographs by Marc Marquez, it’s as if one’s skin has been removed. We see very sparse rooms, we not only see, but we can almost feel the coldness and the roughness of such places. These images were taken in the housing estates of the former GDR, where such blocks were provided under an “Urban Redevelopment Plan” and were scheduled for demolition in 2009.

Yojiro Imasaka : “New Works” (Photography)

In Imasaka’s photographic investigation of urban space in New York and Chicago, he has found a unique perspective on the tall buildings that create these cities skylines. Shooting straight up between adjacent tall buildings towards the sky, he creates a narrow vista, like a long tunnel, that ends in open sky; up and down are reversed and the viewer feels as if he were standing over a bottomless abyss.

In reflecting on the complexity of the negotiations between estranged lives and de-territorialised worlds, one might wonder if the generic city is synonymous with the contemporary airport. Immured in temporality and suffering from a sense of historical discontinuity, the airport is the elementary expression of abstract space.
