De Barros questioned the amateur pictorial and academic tradition in Brazilian photography, which emphasised classical rules of composition. His experiments investigated the limits of the traditional photographic process, intervening directly in the negative, making multiple exposures of the same film, superpositions, montages and cuttings of the amplifications that questioned the rectangular format of photography. His output came close to formal researches in which his main interest was the rhythms and planes that often project into the space beyond the frame. In the following year, he held the memorable exhibition Fotoformas [Photoforms] in which he completely merged engraving, drawing and photography to inaugurate abstraction in Brazilian photography.
