Mårten Lange : “Anomalies” Series (Photography)

Shot in Sweden and Japan, the images in Anomalies are deliberately de-contextualized. Lange notes. “It’s not about a place. If you leave the place out of the story, the images can take on different weights. Places are really loud.” The objects that populate Anomalies, on the other hand, are suffused with a deep, seemingly impenetrable silence.

Paul van Hulzen : ‘On the Road’ Series (Photography)

Paul van Hulzen photographs ‘places’. Besides urban locations, these can also include ‘landscapes’, interiors and even objects. He makes no fundamental distinction between a ‘natural landscape’ and a more urban environment.

Tim Lisko : ‘Shinkansen’ Series (Photography)

When I make a photograph, I am literally cropping out the rest of existence — its tension, its chaos, its hunger, its pain. For one small moment, I wall myself into a world of my own creation; a world where things may not make immediate narrative or logical sense, but where everything is in balance.

“Things from the beach at the beach, where the light makes them look like sculptures or installations. This light gives them importance and beauty even if they’re just small buildings of human creation.”

Awoiska van der Molen : Photography Series

The cities visited by Awoiska van der Molen are not usually part of the regular city trip assortment. Not that it really matters: we would be spared the obligatory sights anyway, and if, like so many tourists, couleur locale is what you’re looking for, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

João Castilho : ‘Spice’ (Photography)

Photographed in Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats this series forms part of a larger body of work begun in 2008 involving interventions in nature. In the case of Spice, the choice of pepper and saffron spices to make the interventions was inspired by the space itself: a desert of salt. These interventions are inherently ephemeral, and were made to be photographed. The work intersects other forms of art, with elements from painting (the use of pigments) and Land Art (transforming the landscape).

James Pomerantz : Agua Sagrada (Photography)

“After hanging out for a little while, I noticed how people were drawn to the light and how they would interact with it. Some were clearly anxious about swimming in the dark water and looking for the security of the sun. Others seemed to seek out its warmth. Some would stare up into the light. Others would float face down, peering into water.” James Pomerantz

Bohnchang Koo : ‘White’ Series (Photography)

Bohnchang’s work has always dealt with impermanence, with the decay and disappearance of living things. In his recent work, Koo continues this long journey to capture the fleeting and the mortal. In these spare natural landscapes—the sea, pine needles on snow, dust on a wall, withered vines —the artist renders scenes of exquisite beauty while evoking the inexorable passage of time.

Zander Blom : “The Black Hole Universe” (Photography)

‘The Black Hole Universe’ is a long-term photographic book and exhibition project. It involves building makeshift installations in different gallery and studio spaces in cities around the world, and employing them to generate photographic still images for an imaginary futuristic sci-fi noir space film.

Marc Marquez : “LOT” Series (Photography)

When one considers these photographs by Marc Marquez, it’s as if one’s skin has been removed. We see very sparse rooms, we not only see, but we can almost feel the coldness and the roughness of such places. These images were taken in the housing estates of the former GDR, where such blocks were provided under an “Urban Redevelopment Plan” and were scheduled for demolition in 2009.

Yojiro Imasaka : “New Works” (Photography)

In Imasaka’s photographic investigation of urban space in New York and Chicago, he has found a unique perspective on the tall buildings that create these cities skylines. Shooting straight up between adjacent tall buildings towards the sky, he creates a narrow vista, like a long tunnel, that ends in open sky; up and down are reversed and the viewer feels as if he were standing over a bottomless abyss.

René Groebli : ‘Rail Magic’ Series (Photography)

Groebli wanted to photograph, that which is not visible: movement, dynamics and speed. His series “Rail Magic”, is a trailblazing photo essay on the French steam railways, developed in 1949 it’s an interaction of smoke, smell, landscape and romance, a symbol of strength and work of timeless poetry.

Maria Stromvik : ‘Waterscapes’ Series (Photography)

Maria Stromvik is an amateur photographer who started photographing in the summer of 2009. She grew up by the seaside in southern Sweden, and the sea – as well as water in other forms – is a recurrent theme in many of her photographs. The choice of working in black and white was never really a choice.

Hiroshi Sugimoto : ‘Drive Ins’ (Photography)

The New York-based Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto produces photographs in series. He meticulously selects and then researches subjects, returning to the same few time and time again, taking pictures and then producing technically immaculate black and white prints of absorbing clarity and density. Since the late 1970s, Sugimoto has worked on several series that have together encompassed seascapes, dioramas, movie theatres and drive-ins.

Andreas Gefeller : The Japan Series (Photography)

Sensitizing and expanding our perception of what is allegedly a familiar reality is the attitude Düsseldorf-based photographer Andreas Gefeller adopts in his work. His most recent photographs are clearly more formal and structural, and they exhibit striking pictorial qualities.

Berndnaut Smilde : ‘Nimbus’ Series (Probe – Exhibition)

Berndnaut is fascinated by anything in between… Corridors and clouds, not yet there and not yet solid. What if a sculpture were to be nothing but thin air, smoke or scent? We’d discuss the merits of one cloud over the other or would we just shut up in awe.

Michael Flomen : Photograms

In his large-format, black-and-white photographs, Flomen captivates our optic and draws it toward what is hidden in plain sight, sequestered between darkness and the light. He draws our attention to the liminal spaces that exist between tenses, conditions of matter, and even states of being.

Sabine Hornig : ‘Windows’ Series (Photography)

For Sabine Hornig, the window represents a basic, transparent, grid-like system that incorporates her ideas on the gaze, view and perspective, which oscillate between image and sculpture. Hornig finds the windows she uses in her photographs incidentally in modern cities, mostly in Berlin.

Occupying a space between documentary and the make-believe, these photographs, reproduced to a grand scale, transform the elemental terrain of giant Icelandic glaciers as they melt away into a strange, futuristic landscape. Blackout’s awe-striking photographs appear so otherworldly it is almost impossible to believe that these lunar-style landscapes actually exist.

David Maljkovic : ‘Recalling Frames’ (Exhibition)

The title of David Maljkovic’s solo exhibition can be understood in relation to his current body of work but also indicates a recurring theme in his artistic practice: recalling ideas from the past and analysing their impact on the present. He introduces places, their architectural structures and their underlying concepts in modified pictorial arrangements as a means of determining their current potential.

Heidi Leverty : ‘Outbox’ Series (Photography)

This body of work is about recycled and discarded items that no longer perform the functions for which they were intended. What appears to be without value is in fact a source of inspiration, a bounty of objects d’art. Removed from their first use, these materials of paper, metal, plastic and fabric secrete an unexpected visual richness, the product of chance.

Edgar Martins : “When Light Casts no Shadow” Series.

In reflecting on the complexity of the negotiations between estranged lives and de-territorialised worlds, one might wonder if the generic city is synonymous with the contemporary airport. Immured in temporality and suffering from a sense of historical discontinuity, the airport is the elementary expression of abstract space.

The dot orders are television screens, which were photographed at the moment of being turned off. The shutter button is pressed when the power switch on the television is pressed. The camera captures the image in the moment when it breaks down. Arnold Newman : ‘Early Works’ (Photography Series)

“As for myself, I work the way I do because of the kind of person that I am – my work is an expression of myself. It reflects me, my fascination with people, the physical world around us, and the exciting medium in which I work. I do not claim that my way is the best or the only way, it is simply my way. It is an expression of myself, of the way I think and feel.” – Arnold Newman

Julian Faulhaber : Low Density Polyethylene Series

Faulhaber‘s latest series was shot in newly constructed spaces in the time between when they were completed and when they became occupied or used. The intense colors and sheen result from exposure times of 10 to 20 seconds, the perspective selected and the artificial light at the location, rather than from post-production.

Roseanne Lynch : “Document” Series (Photography)

This body of work presents a sustained investigation of light; light that has no material substance and is illusory. This investigation focuses on the immaterial; through it I observe how light molds and moves, light defining the planes, how our reading of a subject can be altered by its interaction with light – sometimes dramatically.
