Photographed in Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats this series forms part of a larger body of work begun in 2008 involving interventions in nature. In the case of Spice, the choice of pepper and saffron spices to make the interventions was inspired by the space itself: a desert of salt. These interventions are inherently ephemeral, and were made to be photographed. The work intersects other forms of art, with elements from painting (the use of pigments) and Land Art (transforming the landscape).

We see very sparse rooms, we not only see, but we can almost feel the coldness and the roughness of such places. These images were taken in the housing estates of the former GDR, where such blocks were provided under an “Urban Redevelopment Plan” and were scheduled for demolition in 2009.

Hiroshi Sugimoto : ‘Drive Ins’ (Photography)
The New York-based Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto produces photographs in series. He meticulously selects and then researches subjects, returning to the same few time and time again, taking pictures and then producing technically immaculate black and white prints of absorbing clarity and density. Since the late 1970s, Sugimoto has worked on several series that have together encompassed seascapes, dioramas, movie theatres and drive-ins.

Immured in temporality and suffering from a sense of historical discontinuity, the airport is the elementary expression of abstract space.
